"description": "Time is money? Or is time not just simply time? Our perception of time seems to be a driven one, a disturbed and an acceleratingly unhealthy one. Instead of living in the now and perceiving the things being around us, we are hunting from one appointment to another, on top of it every free second left is used for being online. Special offer - only until tomorrow! A lifestyle mix of greed and wastefulness. Physical presence is increasingly unnecessary, but even so there still is a lack of time. Since beginning of the human, the goal is to overcome time, immortality. Mechanic replacement parts of the body are already a reality, the upload of consciousness is part of the research currently done. The one thing being lost nowadays is loss itself, because everything has a digital footprint. It seems we have overcome time without having had a fullfilled experience of it. "title": "Self-surveillance and pervasive data",
"description": "We live in an era of pervasive data trails and generalised, automated surveillance. In one sense, an Orwellian vision of total control is becoming real, but perhaps not as we might have imagined. It has instead been partly realised as a strange outgrowth of consumer choice. Most recently, we can now choose to have a smart home device (such as the Amazon Echo or Google Home) as a modern convenience — a computer in a tube that lives in our homes and helps us, but that also listens to everything we do, forever. In this newly-emergent reality, what kind of artistic strategies might be worth pursuing? Is self-surveillance (sousveillance) a method of reacting to, or transforming, the habits and culture of this strange new era? We would like to tease out some of these ideas, in part by discussing some recent artistic projects which work with ideas of self-observation, repetition, instability in the role of participant and observer, indexing, and extended duration.",

"title": "Escape From Flatland",
"description": "Humans are spatial creatures. We evolved to navigate complex environments and manipulate three dimensional objects. Yet our digital lives today are mostly confined to the thin rectangular space of a screen. We live in Flatland. Not only do touch screens restrict our hands to a form of glorified finger painting, but interactive systems in general havent made great use of our abilities for spatial reasoning and situation awareness. That is until now… Recent trends in augmented reality, connected objects, wearables electronics, and virtual assistants among others, show that technology is in the process of becoming increasingly distributed, spatial, embedded, and if we may say 'ubiquitous'. Our physical world is merging with the virtual in new and unexpected ways. The future will be a complex layer cake of digital and physical elements rolled into one continuous connected experience; a world in which matter is programmable and computation is a construction material. What creative possibilities does ambient technology offer for artists and designers? ",

"title": "The World's Most Obsolete Portable Drum Machine",
"description": "A listening session and Sample Salon with the Wurlitzer Sideman 5000 and Darsha Hewitt Manufactured in 1959 and often referred to as the cadillac of drum machines, the Wurlitzer Sideman 5000 is the world's oldest commercially available rhythm generator. Weighing in at 25 kg, this electromechanical vacuum tube operated instrument was revolutionary, allowing musicians to integrate a portable, non-human rhythm section into their performance. Although this machine is quite heavy and unwieldy in comparison to what DJs and electronic musicians carry to gigs today, it is a historically significant machine in the evolution towards portable electronic-music production. Though highly technically complex and completely obsolete Darsha Hewitt revived this machine and produced the first ever comprehensive technical documentation of the Sideman for the internet. The videos are technically rigorous yet framed as a beginner-friendly media archeological investigation into the world of electronics. The artist will conduct a demonstration/listening session with the machine and wire it up so that people can record samples of old fashion electronic ballroom dance sequences and mid-twentieth century machine noise.",

"title": "On Film between Painting and Sculpture",
"description": "The Berlin-based artist Robert Seidel dissolves boundaries of genre by extending the clarity of the drawing through the flow of painting, the spatiality of sculpture and temporal elements into an abstract-film narrative. Besides the silver screen, conceptual, as well as real visual projection surfaces include architectural and sculptural forms. The material for these medial interlacings frequently originates in nature and in the abstract gaze of science on nature, for example in the form of MRI images. Through subsequent deconstruction with digital tools, it becomes possible before the eyes of the recipient to condense these structures into a rhizomatic memory structure independent from physical space and linear time. The filmic image conserves the whole creation process in abstract-organic tableaux vivants. In the process, temporal sequences or movements become not only imagined as frequently attempted in the history of drawing and painting but actually represented.",

"title": "Uncovering The Invisible",
"description": "Berlin based Austrian artist Wolfgang Spahn introduces the analogue aesthetics and techniques that lay at the core of most of his multimedia installations. Starting in the 1990s with modifications of the classic photo slide Spahn decided to stretch the boundaries of slide projections by adding coloured liquids, using magnetic coils or merging sound and visuals. For the installation 'Pictures at an Exhibition', which is an homage to M. P. Mussorgsky, Spahn developed the 'Picture Disc', a transparent miniature picture based on chemical-magnetic experiments with liquid iron. Spahn's aesthetical approach focusses on the idea that analogue slide projections allow for uncovering (almost) invisible pictures that may even be performatively created in the very moment of their presentation. Also, by filming the slide projectors, amplifying their sound and implementing both aspects in his installations he visualises the importance of the machine as an integral part of the art an artistic reference to Vilem Flussser's concept of the 'apparatus'. "description": "Based on amateur and family film archives from the 1920's to present times, Intruders is an audio- visual memory remix of anonymous stories and portraits, a dancing conversation with our own ghosts. Attracted by nostalgia and voyeurism, we are led into a time travel in which we are increasingly followed by familiar, suspicious and curious glances of unknown human figures, seeking our attention in the present time. Intruding our collective memory, the pictures use their own history to feed our inner emotions and internalised fictions. Intruders is co-produced by the video art residency Bandits-Mages and the national French archive Centre CICLIC. Inspired by 4000 watched films and 26 hours of collected archive footage, Intruders is an unique contemporary historical document with more than 2000 live sampled and manipulated audio and video sequences. Dealing with collective memory as well as the intimacy and transience of being, the actuality of this audiovisual performance seems to be timeless in today's interconnected media society, which produces permanently archives. "description": "After introducing themselves and their work, they will focus on the problems for media artists to be part of the traditional gallery-marked in the art business. Even so a lot of Art projects, which use modern technology and try to bring it into a different not consumer-based context, are quite successful, a lot of them are being displayed only in festivals or as digital copies in the internet, rather then being shown in privat galleries. This implements that the creators make a living either from grants, teaching, very small fees or they finance their free art work with client-based commissions. The reasons for this are manifold. A lot of projects are technical experiments on a larger scale, which can hardly be sold as an peace of art that the client could simply place or even hang in his home. Another reason is the fact that a lot of Media Artists rather work on a very conceptual level, creating work that is either only excisting in digital form,very much created for certain spaces or react to certain appearings of modern society. So whenever you would take this projects out of their context they would not make any sense at all.",

"description": "'This project will be the master thesis for my studies at the Bauhaus University Weimar. Since Im a synesthete myself, synesthesia is a topic that is present in my life for many years. The idea of involving this topic into my work first came to my mind about three years ago. It developed and grew over the years and finally I will have the opportunity to realise it. Synesthesia isnt just one weird way of seeing, hearing or smelling the world around us. Every synesthete has his very own way of experiencing a colourful or somehow exciting world. This is the point where my project focuses on. The diversity of experiencing synesthesia. To show this diversity I want to initiate a varity of works. I want to bring together a bunch of artist (preferably non-synesthetes) with synesthetes. The output can be any kind of artwork or media installation visualising a very specific and subjective version of synesthesia. The process of working together will bring up many questions. Questions that can lead to anwsers presented to the visitors or questions raised and still left unanswered to the public.'",

"description": "Creating a new type of event is the conclusion out of 10 years of frustration, research and performances. fALk will be sharing his most recent theoretical research in the field of live audiovisual storytelling and performances. He will shed light on how to succeed in telling a story that has emotions, adds energy to the event can be watched for prolonged periods of times without banning the watchers in a chair and dark room all the while not loosing the overarching idea that it is a live performance that is created in front of the audience and in rhythmic and emotional synch with the music.
For the talk he will elaborate on performance techniques, interface ideas and his personal path forward.
As per usual in his presentation this comes with a heavy dose of utopianism and provocation.

"description": "TRIoon is a live oriented AV project bringing together in a unique jam session three experienced independent artists with diverse backgrounds and approaches. A TRIoon performance is a bending of time in realtime: where moments in time are reassembled using the resonant and the electrical, using tools from a 1000 years of sonic evolution, colour, tone, light and shade. TRIoon explores the realms of method, discipline, chaos, thought, feeling, boundaries, nation, culture and technology, improvising a narrative in realtime.
Armed with a guitar, a bass guitar, a box of childrens instruments, found objects, a radio, FX, self-built Minitronics and 3 laptops which they refuse to synchronise, TRIoon responds to the moment taking the audience on a total rollercoaster ride of the senses encompassing fragility, intensity, movement and stillness.
TRIoon is an international collaboration between producer/musicians Dr.Nojoke (Germany) and J-Lab (UK) & Spanish musician/visual artist, Servando Barreiro operating mainly in the Netaudio and Open Source community. At the moment they are based in Berlin, Germany. TRIoon presented their debut performance at Club Transmediale 09 in Berlin.
