Robert Seidel / On Film between Painting and Sculpture

The Berlin-based artist Robert Seidel dissolves boundaries of genre by extending the clarity of the drawing through the flow of painting, the spatiality of sculpture and temporal elements into an abstract-film narrative. Besides the silver screen, conceptual, as well as real visual projection surfaces include architectural and sculptural forms. The material for these medial interlacings frequently originates in nature and in the abstract gaze of science on nature, for example in the form of MRI images. Through subsequent deconstruction with digital tools, it becomes possible before the eyes of the recipient to condense these structures into a rhizomatic memory structure independent from physical space and linear time. The filmic image conserves the whole creation process in abstract-organic tableaux vivants. In the process, temporal sequences or movements become not only imagined as frequently attempted in the history of drawing and painting but actually represented.

About Robert Seidel

Robert Seidel (*1977) began his studies in biology before transferring to the Bauhaus University Weimar to complete his degree in media design. His projections, installations and experimental films have been shown in numerous international festivals, as well as at galleries and museums such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, ZKM Karlsruhe, Art Center Nabi Seoul, Museum of Image and Sound São Paulo and MOCA Taipei. In his work Seidel is interested in pushing the boundaries of abstracted beauty through cinematographic approaches, as well as ones drawn from science. By the organic interplay of various structural, spatial and temporal concepts, he creates a continuously evolving complexity. Out of this multifaceted perspective emerges a narrative skeleton, through which viewers connects to the artwork on an evolutionary-derived and phylogenetic-fixated symbolic level. Seidel lives and works in Berlin and Jena as artist, filmmaker and curator.

Carla Chan / Poetic data: Humanising the digital - Carla Chan discusses digital manipulation of the erratic forms of nature

Carla will present her latest video works and talk about her creation process which will cover her 2 years research of immersion topic and artistic decision. Her artist decision dissuasion will focus on the role of computer in media art making process.

About Carla Chan

Carla Chan is a media artist based in Berlin and Hong Kong, where she obtained her bachelor degree in Media Arts from the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. She works with a variety of media, such as video, installation, photography and interactive media. Much like the never-ending development of new technology, Chan considers media art as a medium with infinite possibilities for artistic expressions. Minimal in style and form, Chans works often toy with the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion, figure and abstraction. Her recent practice focuses on the ambiguity in nature. Bridging natural transformation and unpredictable computer algorithms, her works are consolidated with a cohesive dynamic between form, means and content. Her works have been selected and showcased extensively in in Asia, Europe, South America and North America. She was selected to participate European Mobile dome Lab [E/M/D/L], a Europe Union funded project which toured six different countries including Montréal (CA), Athens (GR), Plymouth (GB), Dresden (GE), Vienna (AT) and Lima (Peru). The project focuses on exploring virtual reality and immersive media experience. Her video won the 'Top 3' video award at the Jakarta International Video Festival. Before her works also showed in the 26th Stuttgarter Filmwinter (GE), CYNETART festival (GE) and Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 (HK). Recently, she had her solo exhibition at SMAC in Berlin and published her artist book titled TO OUTLAND. And her installation Black Moves is selected for showcase at 21st Incubator for Film and Visual media in Asia as a finalist and 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) in Hong Kong.
